1. SUMMARY

The primary manuscript of the Gospel of Peter does not indicate a title, or whether it was part of a larger narrative. Immediately after the cover page of the manuscript, the passion account unfolds. It begins with Pilate and “Herod the king” arranging the execution of Jesus. Prior to the execution, Joseph of Arimathea, as a “friend of Pilate,” requests from Pilate the body of Jesus for burial, an assurance accepted by Pilate and confirmed by Herod. As in the Gospel of John, the execution takes place the day before Passover, “before the first day” of the “festival of the unleavened bread.” Beaten and mocked, then crucified alongside “two evildoers,” Jesus experiences “no pain at all.” One of the criminals protests the injustice of Jesus’ execution. At noon, darkness covers Judea. Jesus’ last words are: “The power of mine, the power, you have abandoned me.” The body of Jesus, placed on the earth, precedes an earthquake. The sun shines again at 3 pm, and Jesus’ body is wrapped and placed in a tomb in “Joseph’s garden.” The leaders confer with Pilate to have soldiers guard the tomb, and a stone is placed over its opening. On Sabbath morning, the heavens open, two young men descend and enter the tomb, after the stone rolled aside. Three men of giant form leave the tomb, and the cross answers “yes” to a heavenly voice inquiring whether it “preached” to “them sleeping.” As the soldiers ponder what to do, the heavens again open and “a certain human” enters the tomb. The soldiers run to Pilate and report, “Truly was he son of god,” and are instructed by Pilate to “say nothing at all.” Miriam the Magdalene, at dawn on “the lord’s [day],” along with her “friends,” go to the tomb to observe customary mourning, but they worry how they will enter. Finding the stone rolled away, they are met with a young man in a “shining robe” who questions them, then invites them to enter the tomb. Instead, they flee in fear. Now at the last day of the festival of unleavened bread, the people, including the “twelve disciples,” depart to their homes. The narrative concludes with the clear self-identification of Peter as narrator and cuts off when he, his brother Andrew, and Levi son of Alpheus go with “nets” to “the sea.”
